AAPIs talk Immigration Reform

LONG BEACH – Last night, Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders gathered to hear an update from Congressman Luis Gutierrez (D-IL) regarding his plans to introduce comprehensive immigration reform legislation in December. Across the nation in fifteen states and the District of Columbia AAPIs gathered together in house parties to listen in.

In Long Beach, the Pacific Islander community gathered on the Cal State Long Beach campus to call in. After the call they discussed at length the plight of the many Tongans who are living and working in the shadows of the community, without documents and Samoans who wait years to be reunited with their family members. The group planned to come together to take action in January to call for immigration reform before President Obama’s state of the union address.

The Long Beach event was sponsored by Asian Pacific Americans for Progress and the Asian Pacific American Legal Center.
