AAPI Advocates Call for Immigration Reform
Sunday, 08. 16. 2009 – Category: Immigration Reform, Recent Activity
On Monday August 17th, at 11AM in Unity Park in Historic Filipinotown, APALC will host a press conference to launch the National Asian and Pacific Islander (API) Week of Action. The press will hear testimony from community leaders and members about the devastating impact that the immigration system has had on API families. Advocates will discuss the need for immigration reform and its likelihood in the 111th Congress. A simultaneous press event will be held in San Francisco and hosted by the Asian Law Caucus.
While the national media focus is on partisan battles over health care, Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders are also gearing up for the big battle over immigration reform. The API community is one of the fastest growing immigrant groups in the U.S. with more than 15 million API immigrants living here, of which 1.2 million are undocumented. Reacting to President Obama’s recent statements that immigration will have to wait until 2010, a coalition of community and legal groups are holding a press conference to inform the media about the devastating impact the immigration system has on API communities. This press conference is part of a nationwide campaign for immigration reform.
