Openhealth Diabetes Project (OHD): OHD is a 3-year project funded by The California Wellness Foundation using a train-the-trainer model, where Filipino seniors called Senior Peer Educators (SPE’s) undergo an 8-week training on diabetes awareness and management.  After being trained, the SPE’s then go back to their Community Based Organizations (CBOs) and conduct at least 2 educational classes on diabetes.  The project is in its second year and has partnerships with numerous faith-based groups and CBOs, as well as with Filipino nurses and a registered nutritionist and dietician.

Adbokasyon para sa Kalusugan (ASK): ASK, which can be translated into Advocacy for Health, is a 3-year project funded by The Atlantic Philanthropies and the California Community Foundation.  The project seeks to develop leaders among Filipino immigrant baby boomers leaders and engage them around the issue of access to healthy food in the communities of Historic Filipinotown and Eagle Rock.  After undergoing a Promotores training on leadership, nutrition and advocacy, the group will implement an education and advocacy campaign on healthy eating and will encourage Filipino restaurants to add healthy options to their menus, comprar augmentin de descuento.

The most pressing issue FASGI is working on is health-- particularly, the health of the Filipino American community in Los Angeles.  The California Health Interview Survey (2007) has shown that among all Asian ethnic groups in L.A. County, Filipinos have the highest rates of obesity, high blood pressure, diabetes and heart disease.  Although our services are not exclusive to Filipino Americans, our projects are driven by these underlying statistics.
